Some Aspects of NEA Classification

Near Earth Asteroids (NEAs) suffer under large perturbations due to close encounters to the inner planets. Therefore their orbits are highly chaotic. The standard classification after Shoemaker (Aten/Apollo/Amor) is not valid for longer time scales - the chaoticity of the orbits leads to a group mixing. Some attempts were made to establish a more proper dynamical classification of NEAs (e.g. Project Spaceguard by Milani et al). This work shall explain the main difficulties of NEA classification and some new methods to obtain more stable NEA groups.
